Bangladesh have added South African coach Malibongwe Maketa to their national team coaching staff ahead of their upcoming assignments.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed on Friday that Maketa has been appointed assistant coach of the men’s national team. His contract will run from October 2026 to November 2028. The 46 year old will join the Bangladesh team in the UAE, where he will link up with head coach Phil Simmons and the rest of the coaching staff.
Maketa has more than 20 years of coaching experience in South African cricket. He is also a Cricket South Africa Level 4 qualified coach. He worked as assistant coach of the South Africa men’s team from 2017 to 2019. During that time, he was part of the coaching staff at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England.
Maketa was also involved when South Africa won Test series against Australia and India. He was part of the setup during series wins against Sri Lanka and Pakistan as well. He has also worked as head coach of South Africa A, South Africa U19 and the South African National Academy. He previously served as head coach of the Warriors franchise.
Maketa has spent much of his coaching career working with young players. His work with the National Academy focused on preparing players for international cricket. More recently, he served as head coach of South Africa U19 and the National Academy. He also led South Africa Emerging to the CSA One Day Cup Division 2 title in the 2023 to 24 season.
Maketa previously guided South Africa U19 to the ICC U19 World Cup semifinals.
“I am pleased to accept the position of Assistant Coach with the Bangladesh National Team. I am truly grateful for the trust and confidence placed in me by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, and I look forward to contributing positively to the team’s success,” Maketa said.
“We have a young and exciting team, and I am looking forward to working alongside Phil and the rest of the coaching staff to help bring out the best in the players and support their continued development.
“Thank you once again for the opportunity. I am excited to begin this journey and contribute to the Bangladesh National Team.”
