A tiny macaque called Punch has turned into an unexpected sensation at Ichikawa City Zoo, where crowds have been showing up in droves after his story spread online.
On Friday alone, more than 100 people gathered around the enclosure, snapping photos and cheering as the six-month-old hesitantly made his way toward other monkeys.
Punch’s rise to fame began when videos circulated on social media showing him clinging to zookeepers and hauling around a plush orangutan for reassurance.
Zoo staff explained that Punch was left by his mother soon after birth, possibly because she was inexperienced or overwhelmed by the summer heat.
For infant monkeys, a close bond with their mother is critical for protection and emotional development. Caregivers tried offering towels for comfort, but Punch instead became deeply attached to the stuffed toy, which staff now lovingly refer to as “Ora-mama.”
Fans who had followed Punch’s journey online traveled from various places to see him in person. Visitors described the young macaque as “cute” and “heartwarming,” with many saying they felt moved watching him slowly find his place among the group.
According to zoo officials, Punch has begun the process of joining the troop. He has been spotted teasing other monkeys, getting scolded now and then, and gradually picking up social skills.
In one clip, he runs back to his toy after being pulled away, only to return moments later to rejoin the play. Other footage shows adult monkeys embracing and grooming him—an important primate behavior that helps build trust and social bonds.
The zoo encouraged visitors to cheer on Punch’s progress, explaining that even though he is sometimes corrected by others, he has demonstrated notable resilience and emotional strength.
Born in July 2025, Punch initially had trouble settling in, as other monkeys either ignored him or reacted aggressively.
His attachment to the plush toy gave him a sense of security until he slowly started forming connections within the troop.
Now, the once-overlooked baby macaque has become an online favorite, with social media users around the world sending messages of affection and celebrating how Punch has gone from rejection to being cherished by millions.
