Government primary schools will have 64 holidays in 2026, in addition to the weekly weekends on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Directorate of Primary Education (DPE) released the official holiday calendar for the upcoming academic year, reducing the total number of holidays by 12 compared to 2025.
According to a notice signed by Deputy Secretary Rawshan Ara Polly, the biggest reduction has occurred in the Ramadan holidays, which have been shortened by nine days.
Despite this, schools will remain open for nearly three weeks during the holy month to ensure uninterrupted classroom instruction.
It stated that in 2026, schools will be closed for about three weeks, from 8 March to 26 March, for Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr, and Independence Day.
The second-longest holiday stretch, excluding Fridays and Saturdays, will cover 12 days for Eid-ul-Azha and summer vacation, from 24 May to 4 June.
Schools will also remain closed for five days during Durga Puja, from 18 October to 22 October, and for 10 days during winter vacation, from 20 December to 29 December, including Christmas.
The first-term evaluation will be held from 5 May to 15 May, the second-term evaluation from 18 August to 28 August, and the third-term evaluation from 1 December to 10 December, while the primary scholarship exam is scheduled from 20 December to 23 December.
The DPE notice also mentioned that holidays based on religious festivals may be adjusted according to moon sightings, and headteachers have three discretionary leave days that can be taken with approval from the local education office.
