President Mohammed Shahabuddin today called for urgent measures to tackle the climate crisis through effective campaigning and public awareness as Bangladesh joins the global community in observing “World Environment Day 2026” tomorrow.
In a message issued on the eve of the day, the president welcomed the initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to observe the day with the theme “Climate Change: Today’s Action, Tomorrow’s Security.”
This year’s global slogan, “Now for Climate,” highlights the necessity for immediate action to address climate emergency.
The president noted that climate change has become a global reality, with Bangladesh being one of the most vulnerable nations.
He highlighted that frequent natural disasters such as floods, droughts, and cyclones, along with rising temperatures, sea-level rise, and environmental imbalances, are severely impacting the country’s public life, biodiversity, and economy.
To address these challenges and achieve sustainable development, the president said the government has adopted long-term plans with special priority.
Key initiatives to be implemented over the next five years include the planting of 250 million trees, the creation of water reservoirs through canal excavation, increasing the use of renewable energy, and promoting green urbanisation and environment-friendly industrialisation.
Stressing that the government or any single institution cannot tackle the environmental and climate crisis alone, the president called for a collective effort.
He expressed his belief that a safe and sustainable environment for future generations can only be ensured through the active participation of the private sector, researchers, civil society, and the general public.
“Let us build a green, safe, and sustainable Bangladesh through collective responsibility, effective measures, and public awareness,” the president said, wishing success to all programmes scheduled for World Environment Day 2026.
