Police arrested the prime suspect in the murder case of a businessman from Baishari Bazar in Naikhongchhari, Bandarban.
Naikhongchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mozammel Haque confirmed the matter.
The arrestee has been identified as Udayan Dhar. The deceased was named Aziz Khalifa, a businessman from Baishari Bazar.
Udayan was arrested from Sitakunda, Chattogram on Monday, 18 days after the incident. According to police, Aziz was kidnapped from Cox’s Bazar on 21 May.
Local sources said after his abduction, Aziz sent audio messages to his relatives expressing fear for his life and specifically naming Udayan, a cloth merchant at Baishari Bazar.
The victim’s family alleged that the kidnappers tortured Aziz before abandoning him in critical condition near the Eidgaon Islamabad railway station.
An army patrol team rescued him and admitted him to a hospital.
He died after his family brought him home. Aziz’s family then filed a murder case naming Udayan as the primary accused. Udayan had been hiding since the case filing.
OC Mozammel said, “The investigation is ongoing, and operations are underway to bring other suspects involved under the law.”
