Mosaddek Hossain marked his return to Bangladesh’s ODI side after four years with an unbeaten 86 from 70 balls as the hosts recovered from a middle-order wobble to post 284-8 against Australia in the first ODI on Tuesday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
Bangladesh lost Saif Hassan for four in the second over when Nathan Ellis found an edge to second slip. Australia then missed an early chance to remove Najmul Hossain Shanto when Marnus Labuschagne dropped a catch on nine.
Shanto and Tanzid Hasan took advantage. They added 96 runs for the second wicket and pushed Bangladesh through the powerplay at a healthy rate. Tanzid struck 54 from 44 balls with seven fours and a six before Ellis removed him with a slower delivery.
Shanto continued to control the innings and reached a composed fifty before falling for 67 from 86 balls. His dismissal left Bangladesh on 144-4 after Australia claimed three wickets for 34 runs.
That collapse opened the door for Mosaddek. Recalled to the ODI side for the first time in four years, the all-rounder settled quickly and rebuilt the innings alongside Tawhid Hridoy. The pair added valuable runs before Hridoy departed for 31.
Mosaddek then took charge during the closing overs. Australia dropped another chance when Cooper Connolly spilled a catch off Matt Renshaw’s bowling. The right-hander made them pay.
He brought up his half-century and accelerated sharply against both pace and spin. Mosaddek struck boundaries regularly and cleared the ropes when Bangladesh needed momentum.
While wickets fell around him, he remained calm and carried the innings deep. Taskin Ahmed also played an important late cameo, scoring 20 from 16 balls before falling off the final ball of the innings.
Mosaddek finished unbeaten on 86 from 70 deliveries and turned a position of uncertainty into a competitive total. His knock guided Bangladesh to 284-8 and gave the hosts a strong platform heading into Australia’s chase.
