A Dhaka court on Sunday fixed 3 November as the new date for submitting further investigation report in the case filed over the murder of Inqilab Mpncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
With this, the submission of further investigation report has been deferred for 20th time.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam set the new date, as the investigating officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abdul Quader Bhuiyan of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), failed to submit the report on the scheduled date.
Attack and hospitalisation
According to case documents, Hadi concluded election campaigning in Motijheel after Jummah prayers on 12 December last year.
Around 2:20pm, while he was heading towards Suhrawardy Udyan, assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire on the autorickshaw carrying him in Box Culvert area under Paltan Model Police Station.
Hadi was critically injured in the attack and was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Following surgery at the hospital, he was transferred to Evercare Hospital in the capital.
On 15 December, Hadi was sent to Singapore for advanced medical treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries on 18 December while undergoing treatment.
The case initially filed over the shooting was subsequently converted into a murder case.
Investigation and no-confidence petition
Following an investigation, the Detective Branch (DB) submitted a charge sheet on 6 January against 17 individuals, including former ward councillor Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappi and Faisal Karim Masud.
However, expressing dissatisfaction with the charge sheet, Inqilab Moncho Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber filed a no-confidence petition on 15 January.
Upon hearing the petition, the court accepted it and directed CID to conduct a further investigation.
Since then, the CID has been carrying out further probe; however, due to the failure to submit the report on schedule, the court has deferred the submission deadline 20 times to date.
