A Dhaka court on Monday barred Faisal Karim Masud, the prime accused in the murder case of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, and his wife Shaheda Parvin Samia from travelling abroad, even though Faisal is currently in custody in India.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the order following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The ACC is investigating alleged suspicious transactions involving around Tk127 crore in several bank accounts linked to Faisal and people associated with him.
ACC Assistant Director Md Saifur Rahman told the court that there was information suggesting the accused might attempt to leave the country, which could hamper the investigation.
After hearing the petition, the court granted the ACC’s prayer and imposed the travel ban on Faisal and his wife.
Faisal and his associate Alamgir Hossain were arrested by the West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force in Bongaon, near the Bangladesh-India border, on 8 March, according to Indian media reports.
They have since remained in Indian custody.
Faisal has been named the prime accused in the case over Hadi’s killing.
Hadi, an aspiring candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot in Dhaka’s Paltan area on 12 December.
He received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Evercare Hospital before being airlifted to Singapore on 15 December.
He died at Singapore General Hospital on 18 December.
On 14 December, Abdullah Al Jaber filed an attempted murder case with Paltan Model Police Station against Faisal and several unnamed individuals.
The case was later amended to a murder case following Hadi’s death.
A charge sheet filed in January named 17 people in the case.
