Police have arrested a Chhatra Dal supporter, Azmain Hossain Lanju, after an audio clip in which he threatened to assault police personnel and journalists went viral on social media.
Melandah police arrested Lanju from Purba Malancha area of the upazila on Thursday afternoon following a raid. Lanju is the son of Suja Miah of that locality.
According to the police, an audio clip from a Messenger group of Melandah Upazila Chhatra Dal recently leaked on social media.
In the audio clip, Lanju was heard saying: “If we, as Chhatra Dal, cannot beat up two or four journalists and the police administration while BNP is in power, then what is the point?”
Referring to permission from local Chhatra Dal leader Jewel, he further said, “If Jewel Bhai gives the go-ahead, we will give journalists a severe beating. Later, I will speak with the MP sir and send them to court.”
The audio also revealed plans involving other leaders to detain journalists arriving to gather news, assault them, and hand them over to the police station after informing the lawmaker.
The viral audio clip sparked intense discussion and widespread criticism across Melandah. Taking prompt notice of the incident, Jamalpur District Superintendent of Police instructed Melandah police to launch an operation, leading to Lanju’s arrest.
Moniruzzaman Shiplu Fakir, convener of Melandah Upazila Chhatra Dal, said he would discuss the matter with leaders and activists of the organisation to take necessary action.
Confirming the matter, Jamalpur Assistant Superintendent of Police (Madarganj Circle) Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan said that the accused was arrested during an operation conducted under the direction of the superintendent of Police following the leak of the threat audio clip.
Legal proceedings against him are underway, and he will be produced before court on Friday. He added that no one engaging in unlawful activities would be spared.
