Nine fishermen were jailed for catching mother hilsa in violation of the government ban, while illegal nets were seized and burned during a mobile court drive in the Padma River in Shibchar, Madaripur, on Thursday evening.
The mobile court, led by Shibchar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) HM Ibne Mizan, conducted drives at different points along the Shibchar section of the Padma River from Thursday evening until midnight.
Police personnel, fisheries department officials and various political figures were present during the operation.
UNO Mizan confirmed that the drive was ongoing.
“Illegal current nets have been seized in the operation. This drive will continue to protect mother hilsa,” he said.
