Police have detained four activists of the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) from a hunger strike by candidates denied gazette notification in the 45th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination at the University of Dhaka (DU).

They were detained from the hunger strike site in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture around midnight on Thursday.

The candidates began their hunger strike on Thursday afternoon. Allegations emerged that activists of the banned BCL were also among the protesters. Later, Shahbagh police conducted an operation in the presence of the DU proctorial team and detained four people from among those staging the hunger strike.

The detainees are Md Habibul Islam, deputy general secretary of the BCL’s Ashraful Haque Hall unit at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU); Moniruzzaman, a candidate for the post of education and study circle secretary in the same hall’s BCL unit; Akram Gazi Hridoy, former vice-president of the BCL’s Amar Ekushey Hall unit at DU; and Ferdous, former assistant secretary of the BCL’s Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall unit at DU.

Kamal Uddin, sub-inspector and in-charge of the Nilkhet Police Outpost, said, “The detainees were taken to Shahbagh Police Station for questioning. Legal action will be taken against them after verification.”
