The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has charged 28 students of Dhaka University (DU) in connection with Tofazzal Hossain murder at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall in September 2024.
PBI submitted the supplementary charge sheet on Tuesday accusing seven more accused, raising the total number of defendants to 28.
The charge sheet was submitted to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka, court sources said. Hannanul Islam, additional superintendent of police at the PBI, filed the charge sheet.
Earlier, on 30 December 2024, Shahbagh Police Station’s Inspector Asaduzzaman initially submitted a charge sheet against 21 accused. After names of eight accused were dropped from the case, the complainant filed an objection petition. Following a hearing on the petition, the court on 26 February 2025 ordered further investigation by the PBI.
Those named in the supplementary charge sheet include Jalal Mia, 26, of the Physics Department, Sumon Mia, 21, of the Soil, Water and Environment Department, Mottakin Sakin Shah, 24, of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Al Hossain Sazzad, 23, of the Geography Department, and Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall resident students Ahsan Ullah alias Bipul Sheikh, 24, Wajibul Alam, 22, Firoz Kabir, 23, Abdus Samad, 24, Sakib Raihan, 22, Yeasin Ali Gain, 21, Yamuzzaman alias Yam, 22, Fazle Rabbi, 24, Shahriar Kabir Shovon, 24, Mehedi Hasan Imran, 25, Ratul Hasan, 20, Sultan Mia, 24, Nasir Uddin, 23, Mobasser Billah, 25, Shishir Ahmed, 22, Mohosin Uddin alias Shafi, 23, Abdullahil Kafi, 21, Sheikh Ramzan Ali, 25, Rashed Kamal Anik, 23, Md Moniruzzaman Sohag, 24, Abu Raihan, 23, Redwanur Rahman Parvez, 24, Rabbikul Riad, 23 and Ashraf Ali Munshi, 26.
The incident of killing took place on the night of 18 September 2024, when Tofazzal Hossain, 35, was beaten at the hall’s guest room after being suspected of theft.
Videos later circulated on social media showed him being assaulted, then fed rice in the canteen, before being beaten again. Around midnight, students took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The following day, Mohammad Amanullah, a supervisor at the university’s estate office, filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station.
Tofazzal Hossain was from Kathaltali union of Barguna’s Patharghata upazila. According to his relatives, Tofazzal “lost his mind” after the deaths of his parents and brother and became a drifter.
