National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary has urged the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami to engage in dialogue and resolve their ongoing political conflict over the July Charter and proposed referendum.
He added, “A political wrestling match is now taking place between Jamaat and BNP. We don’t want to see street fights in the name of politics. That’s why we have already taken some initiatives to stop such confrontations.”
Patwary made the call on Thursday evening at a press conference held at the NCP’s temporary central office in the city’s Banglamotor area.
He said, “The government has thrown the ball into your court. If you fail to resolve this issue now, it will be embarrassing for you. So, I urge BNP and Jamaat to come to the discussion table.”
The NCP coordinator said that communication is underway with both parties to bring them to dialogue.
“Yesterday [5 November], we held a meeting involving nine parties, including Ganatantra Mancha, AB Party, and Gono Odhikar Parishad,” he added.
“The country is going through a critical phase,” Patwary said. “If BNP and Jamaat agree on reforming the July Charter and commit to implementing those reforms after forming a government, the NCP may consider forming an alliance with either of them.”
He also made it clear that without an agreement on justice and reform, his party would not join any coalition.
NCP Senior Joint Member Secretary Dr Tasnim Jara and members of the party’s Central Election Steering Committee were also present at the press conference.
