A delegation of optometrists met with State Minister for Health and Family Welfare M A Muhit on Thursday to discuss modernising the country’s eye care sector and bringing it up to international standards.
The meeting emphasised the need for coordinated efforts among government and private stakeholders to ensure quality eye care for all citizens, says a press release.
The five-member delegation included Gazi Riaz Rahman, Shahadat Hossain Delwar, S M Abdullah Al Mamun, Arman Bin Aziz, and S M Moinul Islam. They represented graduates from the Institute of Community Ophthalmology (ICO) and Chittagong Eye Infirmary and Training Complex.
During the meeting, the group proposed the formation of a modern ‘Optometry Council’ to regulate and enhance professional standards. They also called for formal government recognition of optometrists and their integration into the public health system.
The delegation stressed the importance of accessible, technology-driven eye care reaching rural areas and urged the development of a strong policy framework through government-private sector collaboration.
State Minister Muhit assured the delegation of the government’s commitment to improving eye care nationwide. He highlighted the importance of joint efforts by all stakeholders and promised full support for the proposals raised.
The optometrist delegation welcomed the minister’s guidance and intent, noting that proper policy implementation could bring revolutionary changes to Bangladesh’s eye care sector.
