Responsible business conduct is now essential for global trade competitiveness, attracting investment, and securing market access, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir said on Tuesday.

Future competitiveness will not depend solely on production costs but also on sustainable development, transparency, labour standards, environmental responsibility, and responsible business practices, he added.

He made the remarks on Tuesday while speaking as chief guest at the national dialogue titled “Responsible Business Conduct for Resilient Supply Chains and Trade Competitiveness” at a local hotel in Dhaka.

Bangladesh is entering a new phase amid the rapidly changing realities of global trade and investment, he said.

Strong export growth, industrialisation, entrepreneurship development, and resilience against adversity have driven significant economic progress. The ready‑made garment sector, in particular, has played a vital role in job creation, poverty reduction, women’s empowerment, and overall economic growth, he further said.

Muqtadir added that international buyers, investors, regulators, and consumers are now placing greater emphasis on environmental, social, governance, and due diligence processes across every stage of supply chains.

New sustainability‑related rules and expectations in global markets are directly impacting supply systems, the minister said.

Businesses are expected to ensure workplace safety, efficient resource use, good governance, and publish reports on climate and sustainable development, he added.

Strengthening responsible practices in industries will boost the confidence of international buyers and investors, positioning Bangladesh as a responsible and competitive sourcing country. This will expand access to high‑value and emerging markets, attract sustainable quality investment, and enhance supply chain resilience, the minister added.
