Bangladesh made a good start with the ball and kept New Zealand to 247 for 8 in the first ODI in Mirpur on Friday.
All five bowlers used by Bangladesh picked up at least one wicket. Shoriful Islam led the attack with tight bowling. He took 2 for 27 in 10 overs and bowled two maidens. Rishad Hossain and Taskin Ahmed also took two wickets each. Nahid Rana and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz took one wicket each.
New Zealand got runs from Henry Nicholls and Dean Foxcroft. Nicholls scored 63 from 83 balls at the top. Foxcroft added a quick 59 from 58 balls in the lower order.
Bangladesh kept control in the middle overs. New Zealand slipped to 165 for 5 in 36 overs. The visitors tried to build after the powerplay, but Bangladesh did not let them break free.
Nicholls and Will Young added 73 runs for the second wicket. It helped New Zealand recover after an early loss. But Bangladesh hit back in the middle overs and took three wickets for just 37 runs.
Rishad Hossain broke the stand when he dismissed Young for 30 in the 22nd over. Soon after, Mehidy Hasan Miraz bowled Tom Latham for 14. Rishad struck again in the 28th over and removed Nicholls, who was well set.
Shoriful Islam came back later and removed Muhammad Abbas to add more pressure on the lower order.
Earlier, New Zealand chose to bat first but started slow. They reached 50 for 1 in 13 overs. Shoriful gave Bangladesh the first breakthrough. He removed Nick Kelly for 7 in the seventh over. The batter had faced 15 balls before scoring.
Shoriful kept things tight early on. He finished his first spell with 5 overs, 1 maiden, 9 runs, and 1 wicket.
