Kate Mara and Rooney Mara shared a rare sisterly moment on the red carpet at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on 3 September, where they premiered their first film together, Bucking Fastard.
According to PEOPLE, the sisters embraced and posed together at the world premiere before joining co-star Orlando Bloom and director Werner Herzog on the carpet.
The sisters play deeply intertwined twins, Jean and Joan Holbrooke, in Herzog’s film. According to the official festival synopsis, the characters speak in unison, love the same man and share the same dreams. The film also stars Domhnall Gleeson.
During a press conference earlier that day, Rooney, 41, admitted that the project initially felt “very daunting”. She said the challenge came from the idea of playing two characters who were essentially the same person.
However, their lifelong bond soon made the process easier.
Rooney said they had spent their entire lives together and had a shared history and childhood. That created an “unspoken world” between them that they did not have to work hard to build on screen. Once they found their rhythm, she said, they had a great deal of fun and the experience became a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity.
Kate, 43, also spoke warmly about working with her sister in a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s The Julia Cunningham Show. She described the film as “quite beautiful and very unusual”.
“It was so cool,” she said of acting alongside Rooney. She added that the experience was particularly special because working together meant they saw each other every day.
Kate said that after they finished the film, they found themselves missing each other and wishing they could work together again. With both of them busy with their children and other commitments, she said, spending time together has become more difficult.
Bucking Fastard marks the first time the real-life sisters have appeared together in a film. Herzog directed and wrote the 109-minute production, which is an Ireland-US co-production and part of the Venezia 83 competition.
Kate is best known for starring in the first season of House of Cards and the 2015 film Fantastic Four. Rooney earned Oscar nominations for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Carol.
The 83rd Venice International Film Festival runs from 2 to 12 September.
