A birthday wish involving two maunds of shiuli flowers has sparked curiosity about an admirer of actress Pori Moni, after actor-director Shahriar Nazim Joy jokingly wondered whether someone’s husband had secretly sent the blooms from Chattogram. Pori, however, later clarified that the sender was a woman.
The mystery began when Pori celebrated her 34th birthday on 24 October at a restaurant in Purbachal, Dhaka. The event, titled ‘Shiuli Shondhya’, featured shiuli flowers throughout the venue, with the actress also wearing a saree decorated with the seasonal blooms.
A few days before her birthday, Pori had posted on Facebook that she wanted two maunds of shiuli flowers. Although the flowers are difficult to preserve for long, someone from Chattogram arranged to have them flown to Dhaka, leaving the actress delighted.
Pori shared the story at her birthday gathering but did not initially reveal the sender’s identity. The gesture soon became a talking point on social media.
On Sunday, Joy joined the discussion with a humorous Facebook post. He suggested that wealthy wives in Chattogram might be wondering which of their husbands had sent the flowers. He even joked that the sender should avoid being identified, adding that he, too, had given shiuli flowers to people without getting caught.
Pori responded in the comments, clarifying that a woman—not a man—had sent the flowers. She did not disclose the woman’s name.
Beyond the joke, Joy praised Pori for her connection with the film industry. He described her as one of the country’s prominent actresses who cares for colleagues and shows them affection and respect beyond professional obligations such as press conferences and publicity events.
The birthday celebration also brought news of Pori’s upcoming film ‘Farzana’, directed by Tarek Rahman.
Most of the shooting has already been completed. The actress will portray a woman struggling through difficult circumstances, according to the director.
Pori thanked her fans, colleagues and well-wishers for their continued support, saying she hopes to return their affection through good work.
