Real Madrid defender Marc Cucurella is a doubt for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan after being forced off with cramps during Friday’s 1-0 defeat by Real Betis, according to reports.
The setback came at the end of a difficult night for José Mourinho’s side, who suffered their first defeat of the season in Seville. Cucurella had established himself as Mourinho’s preferred left-back in recent weeks, starting ahead of Álvaro Carreras.
Mourinho confirmed after the match that the Spain international was withdrawn because of cramps, with Carreras replacing him late on.
There is no indication yet that Cucurella has suffered a serious injury, but according to reports, the short turnaround before Tuesday’s Champions League opener against Inter could make his involvement uncertain.
His potential absence would further complicate Mourinho’s selection plans. Real Madrid are already dealing with a number of fitness and availability issues, with Aurélien Tchouaméni, Éder Militão, Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy and Endrick among those facing injury concerns.
The situation is also complicated by suspensions affecting several players, leaving Mourinho with fewer options as Madrid prepare for their first European match of the season.
Cucurella started against Betis after also featuring in Madrid’s 4-0 win over Málaga last weekend. Mourinho had previously indicated that Carreras would provide cover if the former Chelsea defender tired during matches.
Madrid will now hope Cucurella’s problem proves to be no more than a temporary setback as they prepare for the visit of Inter Milan.
