New ferry planned for Hatia ahead of Eid: State minister

State Minister for Shipping Md Razib Ahsan has announced plans to introduce a new ferry service in Hatia upazila before Eid-ul-Azha to ease the ongoing transport crisis in the island region.

The announcement came during his visit to Nalchira Chowghat on Saturday, where he inspected ferry operations and assessed the situation on the ground.

The state minister said initiatives have been taken to widen ferry terminals on both sides to improve service efficiency.

He also noted that regular dredging is being carried out to maintain river navigability and ensure uninterrupted ferry movement.

“The government is working relentlessly to ensure safe and convenient travel for people. We have come here to directly observe the problems and take necessary steps to make commuting easier for Hatia residents,” he said.

Emphasising inclusivity, Rajib Ahsan added that the visit was undertaken in the interest of people from all walks of life, regardless of political affiliation, with a focus on ensuring overall development.

He further said that steps are being taken to upgrade ferry ramps and protect riverbanks permanently in coordination with the Water Development Board, aiming to make ferry services safer and more sustainable.

The ministry also has several long-term plans to improve the country’s water transport system, he added.

During the visit, BIWTA Chairman Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mostafa, Shipping Ministry Secretary Nurunnahar Chowdhury, along with officials from various administrative levels, political leaders, journalists, and local residents, were present.
