NCP has demanded the arrest of recently resigned president Mohammed Shahabuddin and his subsequent handover to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
The party’s Member Secretary, Akhter Hossain, raised the demand during a press conference held on Friday at NCP’s central office in Banglamotor.
Akhter said public confidence in the current government would be compromised if Shahabuddin remains outside the reach of justice following the July killings.
He said, “If Shahabuddin is allowed to go free after the July killings, the people of the country will lose faith in the current government. Therefore, he must be arrested and handed over to the International Crimes Tribunal”.
Akhter further said that Shahabuddin had structured his resignation letter with a narrative of ill health specifically to create an opportunity for a “safe exit”. He urged the government to take him into custody and bring him to justice immediately.
He also added that justice process for those who sacrificed their lives in July mass uprising would remain incomplete if the former president is not prosecuted. Labelling the recently resigned president a “crony of fascism”, Akhter said it is essential to initiate legal proceedings and bring him under the rule of law.
