Police have recovered an intact 70kg brass bell stolen from St Christina Catholic Church, located at Asad Gate, Mohammadpur.
The theft occurred between Wednesday night and early Thursday, when unidentified thieves made off with the bell after the church’s CCTV camera recording was switched off.
Confirming the incident, Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Abdul Halim said a formal complaint was lodged by the church authorities.
Upon receiving information, police personnel alongside members of Detective Branch (DB) visited and inspected the scene immediately.
Police subsequently initiated legal proceedings and launched an intensive operation involving multiple coordinated teams to track down the suspects and recover the stolen property.
Investigators noted that the cameras were deliberately shut down in a pre-planned move prior to the theft.
Later, police retrieved the bell wrapped inside a white poly bag abandoned next to a garbage dustbin on Zakir Hossain Road within the Mohammadpur Police Station area.
According to OC, the recovered bell remains in police station custody as legal procedures continue.
He added that the pre-theft deactivation of the CCTV system is being investigated as a priority.
Police drives remain ongoing to identify and arrest those involved by analyzing surrounding CCTV footage and employing trusted informants.
