Indonesia won the FIFA ASEAN Cup for the first time after beating Thailand on penalties in a dramatic final in Jakarta on Monday.
The hosts won the shootout 4-2 after the match finished 2-2 following extra time at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
The victory also ended Indonesia’s long wait for a win against Thailand. They had not beaten their Southeast Asian rivals in their previous eight meetings over the last 10 years.
Thailand started with a defensive approach and looked to attack on the break. Indonesia controlled more of the ball but struggled to create clear chances.
Mitch Baker and Calvin Verdonk both sent efforts wide as the first hour passed without a goal.
Thailand then suffered a setback when Suphanan Bureerat went off with an injury. The match changed late in the second half. Thailand defender Nicholas Mickelson received two yellow cards within five minutes and was sent off.
Indonesia took advantage in the 84th minute. Dean James sent a free kick towards goal and the ball took a touch off Thailand substitute Iklas Sanron before beating goalkeeper Saranon Anuin.
Thailand responded just three minutes later despite playing with 10 men. Seksan Ratree sent a deep cross into the box and Iklas met it with a fine volley at the far post to make it 1-1.
Thailand then took a surprise lead in extra time. Anan Yodsangwal won the ball from Elkan Baggott before finding Peeradol Chamrasamee. Peeradol finished past Emil Audero in the 111th minute.
Indonesia refused to give up. Baggott made up for his earlier mistake five minutes later. The Bangkok born defender fired a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the net to level the score at 2-2.
The match then went to penalties. Thailand captain Sarach Yooyen missed their third penalty before Indonesia goalkeeper Audero saved Nattapong Sayriya’s effort.
That save sealed a 4-2 shootout victory and handed Indonesia their first FIFA ASEAN Cup title in front of their home supporters.
