National Citizen Party (NCP) has permanently expelled Md Najmul Thakur, the party’s Itna Upazila convener in Kishoreganj, following the viral spread of a video on social media showing him consuming Yaba.
The decision was communicated on Thursday morning in an official letter signed by Ratul Nahid Bhuiyan, NCP’s Liberation War Affairs secretary.
According to the letter, “clear and specific allegations” were proven against Thakur regarding activities contrary to organisational discipline and opposed to the party’s principles and ideology.
Considering the gravity of the allegations, the disciplinary action was taken on the advice of Central Committee Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam and Dhaka Divisional Organisational Secretary Saifullah Haider, and upon the directive of Kishoreganj District Convener Sheikh Khairul Kabir.
Under the party directive, Thakur has been permanently expelled from primary membership as well as all organisational positions and responsibilities of NCP with immediate effect.
Confirming the expulsion, the Kishoreganj district convener said the video circulating on social media appeared to be genuine.
He explained that the decision was taken on the instructions of central leaders, adding, “We believe in discipline. If such allegations arise against any leader or activist, we take immediate action. This will continue.”
Attempts to reach Thakur on his mobile phone for comment were unsuccessful as his device was found switched off.
However, in a post on his personal Facebook account, Thakur dismissed the video as “completely false and baseless”.
Thakur claimed that he had intervened in certain unresolved matters in Itna for the welfare of the country and its people, prompting a faction to conspire against him.
He asserted that the circulating video was part of this conspiracy and maintained that the individual appearing in the video was not him.
He added in his post that the video has been submitted to experts for metadata and frame-by-frame analysis, with an official report expected shortly.
Thakur urged the public not to pay heed to rumours or misleading information and to await the authentic findings.
