The National Citizen Party (NCP) on Tuesday accused the BNP and its supporters of deliberately distorting remarks by its Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary for political gain.
In a statement issued on Tuesday night, NCP Convener Nahid Islam and Member Secretary Akhter Hossen condemned what they described as the selective presentation of Patwary’s comments and accused the BNP of attempting to shift blame for the failure to prevent sabotage allegedly carried out by the Awami League.
The NCP said Patwary’s full remarks were, “If Awami League is to be removed from Bangladesh, reforms are necessary. If these three demands-implementation of the referendum verdict, reforms, and justice for the July mass killings-are met, there will be no more cocktails exploding in Dhaka city.”
According to the NCP leaders, the remarks were intended to propose measures aimed at permanently ending fascism and restoring law and order and peace in the country.
They alleged that the BNP and political activists aligned with the party had deliberately taken parts of the statement out of context and portrayed them differently to gain political advantage.
The NCP leaders also alleged that activists of the Awami League, whose organisational activities have been banned, were carrying out arson attacks, cocktail explosions and other acts of sabotage across the country.
They accused the government and law enforcement agencies of failing to contain such activities and said the attempt to blame the NCP and other opposition parties was aimed at concealing those failures and diverting attention from the deteriorating law-and-order situation.
The NCP said its political movement would continue until its demands for justice over the July mass killings, reforms and implementation of the referendum verdict were met.
The party also called for an immediate end to what it described as “false propaganda” and demanded effective legal action against those responsible for acts of sabotage.
