Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Anwar Hossain was severely injured after a group of miscreants attacked him while he was attempting to apprehend two extortionists caught in the act of collecting money from drivers in Narsingdi city on Saturday.
The incident occurred around 10am at the Arshinagar intersection in Narsingdi municipality when ASP Hossain intervened after witnessing extortion activities involving battery-run auto-rickshaw drivers and other vehicles, reports UNB.
“I was returning from Birpur when I saw several individuals collecting money from moving vehicles. I detained two for questioning, and suddenly 30 to 40 people attacked me. They beat me until I lost consciousness,” ASP Hossain recounted from the hospital.
He was rescued by local residents and fellow police officers and was immediately taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital for treatment.
Dr Farida Gulshana Kabir, the RMO at the hospital, confirmed that the officer sustained serious injuries, including blood clots on his neck and legs. He was later referred to Rajarbagh Police Hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment.
ASP Hossain alleged that the attackers were linked to individuals who control the illegal toll collection at the municipality’s CNG-auto rickshaw stand.
However, Md Alamgir, the leaseholder of the Narsingdi Municipal Council’s auto-rickshaw stand, denied the allegations.
“No one attacked the police. We were collecting fees as per municipal guidelines. I only heard there was some pushing during a misunderstanding. The news of an attack is baseless,” he said.
