Former Bangladesh Television (BTV) Director General, renowned filmmaker and producer Mostafizur Rahman was laid to rest at Banani Cemetery on Wednesday. Although he died three days ago, his body had been kept at the mortuary of a hospital in Mohakhali, Dhaka, while the family waited for his two sons to return from abroad.
After both sons arrived in Bangladesh, family members held his funeral prayers before his burial.
His wife, singer Rowshan Ara Mostafiz, told the media that their younger son, Rajin Abhi Mostafiz, returned from Sydney, Australia, while their elder son, Tanvir Rana Mostafiz, arrived from Toronto, Canada. The family then arranged the funeral according to their wishes.
At 10am on Wednesday, Rahman’s body was taken to the Bangladesh Television headquarters, where colleagues, admirers and well-wishers paid their final respects. The first funeral prayer was held there.
His body was later taken to the Channel i office, where the second funeral prayer took place. Family members were joined by Channel i Managing Director Faridur Reza Sagar, former BTV General Manager M Hamid, filmmaker Habibul Islam, instrumental musician Gazi Abdul Hakim, actor Afsana Mimi and other prominent figures from the cultural arena.
The body was then taken to Uttara Sector 3 Jame Mosque. Following the third and final funeral prayer after Zuhr prayers, he was buried at Banani Cemetery.
His younger son, Rajin Abhi Mostafiz, confirmed the burial.
Rahman fell ill suddenly at his residence on Sunday (26 July). He was rushed to a private hospital in Uttara, where doctors declared him dead. He was 84.
Widely regarded as one of the architects of BTV’s golden era, Rahman produced timeless television dramas including Ei Shob Din Ratri, Shomoy Oshomoy, Parle Na Rumki and Shankhanil Karagar. His storytelling and filmmaking style helped elevate Bangla television drama to new heights.
Beyond his work as a filmmaker, he made significant contributions to Bangladesh’s television industry through his tenure as BTV Director General and his later role in the establishment of Banglavision and GTV.
Mostafizur Rahman was born in Dhaka on 27 January 1943. His elder son, Tanvir Rana Mostafiz, works at a bank in Canada, while his younger son, Rajin Abhi Mostafiz, serves in the Operations (Revenue) Division of the Government of New South Wales, Australia.
