A Dhaka court on Wednesday allowed police to question Satkhira district Awami League General Secretary Md Nazrul Islam at the jail gate for one day in the murder case of Daffodil International University student Ramiz Uddin Ahmed Rupok, filed over the July uprising.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Jonaid passed the order after a hearing on the matter.
Nazrul Islam was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from the capital’s Bhatara area on 27 July, according to investigators.
The following day, he was produced before the court, where investigation officer Sub-Inspector of Tejgaon Police Station and Inspector of DMP’s Detective Branch (Tejgaon Division) Mohammad Saiful Islam sought a seven-day remand for questioning.
The court sent him to jail and fixed Wednesday for hearing on the remand plea. After the hearing, the court rejected the seven-day remand prayer and allowed police to interrogate him at the jail gate for a day.
Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector Arif Reza confirmed the development, saying Nazrul was produced before the court during the hearing but no lawyer appeared for him.
In the remand petition, the investigation officer said preliminary interrogation had revealed information and evidence suggesting Nazrul’s involvement in the incident mentioned in the case statement.
The officer also said verification of his identity and permanent address was yet to be completed as his address is in another district.
The petition added that there was a risk of him going into hiding if released on bail.
The investigation officer sought his custodial interrogation for a fair investigation, uncovering the motive behind the incident, identifying named and unnamed accused, locating absconding associates and alleged instigators, and arresting others involved in the killing.
According to the case documents, 21-year-old Ramiz Uddin Ahmed Rupok, a student of the Computer Science and Engineering department at Daffodil International University, took part in the anti-discrimination student movement on 24 August 2024.
On that day, he was shot near the Karwan Bazar metro rail station in Dhaka. The attackers left him injured on the road before fleeing.
His friends and fellow protesters rescued him and took him to Padma Hospital in Kathalbagan. Later, he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated, where doctors declared him dead.
Rupok’s father, AKM Rakibul Ahmed, filed the murder case with Tejgaon Police Station. The case names 223 people as accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
