A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Obaidur Rahman, maternal uncle of Mariam, the second wife of Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, to jail in a case filed over her death.
Obaidur was arrested earlier in the day and produced before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam.
Mohammad Salauddin, an inspector with the Detective Branch’s Tejgaon zonal team and the investigation officer in the case, sought an order to keep Obaidur in custody, saying investigators had found evidence of his alleged involvement in the incident.
After a hearing, the court ordered that he be sent to jail.
Prosecution Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam said no bail petition was filed on behalf of Obaidur.
In the court petition, the investigation officer said evidence had emerged linking Obaidur to the circumstances surrounding Mariam’s death. He sought his detention in the interest of a proper investigation and justice.
Mariam’s hanging body was recovered from a flat at the NAM complex, opposite the National Parliament, on the evening of 20 September.
Police took Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, into custody later that night.
Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, subsequently filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station accusing Gazi Nazrul, Maksuda and Obaidur of abetting her suicide.
On 21 September, a court granted Gazi Nazrul four-day remand and Maksuda one day remand in the case.
The investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch later that night.
After completing her one-day remand, Maksuda was sent to jail on Tuesday.
Gazi Nazrul is currently on four-day remand, while the DB is continuing its investigation into the case.
