‘NAZA’, the documentary on killings in Gaza that received a special jury prize at the recent Venice Film Festival, is set for a worldwide theatrical release across more than 50 territories from 28 September, writes Variety.
Produced by The Guardian with James Wilson of JW Films and executive producer Jonathan Glazer, the documentary will later be made available to audiences worldwide for free through The Guardian’s website.
The film was shot at night from rooftops in Tel Aviv and examines what its official synopsis describes as the systems behind the mass killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
French sales company MK2 has secured theatrical distribution for the documentary in 56 territories following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on 10 September.
In the United States, ‘NAZA’ will begin screening on 30 September under a distribution plan that does not involve selling the film to a studio or independent distributor. The US rollout will begin exclusively at the IFC Center in New York City.
The Guardian and MK2 have assembled a team of US and international partners and consultants for the release. The documentary has secured theatrical distributors in France, the UK, Italy, Spain, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Greece, Portugal, Poland, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Canada, Brazil, Turkey, Central America and the Middle East.
In Italy, the film will receive a three-day event release across 500 screens through I Wonder from 28 to 30 September.
The documentary has also been offered to distributors and cinemas in Israel, while The Guardian said it would explore additional ways to make the film accessible in the occupied Palestinian territories.
‘NAZA’ draws on investigations and revelations published between 2023 and 2025 by Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine, Hebrew-language outlet Local Call and The Guardian.
Directors Abraham and Szor said the film was made to examine the systems behind the mass killing of Palestinian civilians from the perspective of Israeli filmmakers and journalists.
They said the documentary allowed them to explore aspects that could not be examined as deeply through investigative journalism alone, including “not only the words being said but also those that are not said, the silence”.
