National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Monira Sharmin has filed an appeal with the Election Commission against the decision to cancel her nomination for the reserved women’s seat election of the 13th National Parliament.
She filed the appeal on Sunday by going to the Election Building in the capital.
“Today we filed an appeal against the order cancelling the nomination. The Election Commission has scheduled a hearing for tomorrow at 10:30 am. Insha’Allah, I will come for the hearing tomorrow,” Monira Sharmin told journalists after filing the appeal.
The Returning Officer cancelled Monira Sharmin’s nomination papers on 23 April on the grounds that three years had not passed since her resignation from employment.
The NCP leader joined the Agricultural Bank in November 2023 and resigned in December 2025.
According to Section 29 of the Reserved Women’s Seat Election Act 2004, the rules formulated under the Representation of the People Order (RPO) 1972 apply regarding other regulations for the election of women’s seats.
Regarding candidate disqualification, the RPO states that a person shall be disqualified from being elected as a Member of Parliament if he or she has resigned or retired from any job of the Republic or a statutory public authority, and three years have not passed since such resignation or retirement.
The Election Commission has scheduled a hearing on the appeal for Monday morning.
