Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New York on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, focusing on the Middle East conflict and the safety of Bangladeshi workers.
He also sought Iran’s cooperation in facilitating the movement of Bangladeshi vessels and containers through the Strait of Hormuz.
At a press briefing on Wednesday at the Hyatt Grand Central New York, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir said the prime minister urged an early resolution of the conflict through diplomacy, stressing its potential impact on Bangladesh’s expatriate workforce and energy security.
Kobir also said that Bangladesh has a significant number of workers and professionals in the Middle East, and any prolonged instability could directly affect the country.
He added that Dhaka raised concerns about containers and vessels being delayed around the Strait of Hormuz and requested Iran’s assistance in ensuring their safe passage once conditions improve.
The state minister said Bangladesh maintains a neutral position and is prepared to play a constructive role in promoting peace and stability.
“Bangladesh can become a soft‑medium influence for good, for peace and stability in the world,” he remarked.
