Actress Monira Akter Mithu has spoken out about rising house rents, increasing service charges and the treatment of tenants, urging landlords to show greater compassion.
Speaking at a recent awards ceremony, Mithu highlighted the financial pressures faced by tenants, saying annual rent increases are not matched by similar growth in people’s incomes.
“House rent goes up every year, but our income doesn’t increase every year. We also have to bear the maintenance costs and service charges,” she said.
The actress also questioned the practice of locking residential gates at a fixed hour each night, arguing that such restrictions are outdated.
“Even in 2026, some buildings close their gates at 11p.m. I understand that unauthorised people should not be allowed in, but how do thieves and robbers get inside? Where do these rules go then?” she asked.
Calling for a more empathetic approach, Mithu appealed directly to landlords, saying, “Please be more humane and more tolerant towards your tenants.”
