A mobile court in Rajbari sentenced a 38-year-old man to 10 days of imprisonment on Wednesday for hoarding wooden sticks and bricks in a shop with the intent to create panic among voters.
The convict, identified as Md Hilal Uddin, a resident of Bildhamu village in Narua union, was also fined Tk 500.
The mobile court, led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Ehsanul Haque Shipon, conducted the drive at a shop named “Bhai-Bhai Sanitaris” in Narua Bazaar on Wednesday.
According to the assistant commissioner, 54 wooden sticks and five bags of bricks were found stockpiled in the shop. He stated that the items were intended to intimidate voters both before and after the election. Banners and festoons of a BNP parliamentary candidate were also discovered at the premises.
AC (Land) Shipon further noted that Hilal Uddin admitted the materials were stored for the purpose of engaging in clashes. Although the convict claimed his elder brother, Md Billal Uddin, had placed the items there, Billal failed to appear at the shop despite being summoned multiple times via telephone.
Hilal was subsequently penalised for attempting to exert illegal influence over the election, planning sabotage, and creating public panic.
A team of army personnel, led by Army Camp Baliakandi Commander Major Rubaiyat, provided assistance during the search and the mobile court proceedings.
