The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated efforts to act against those responsible for the attack on actress Azmeri Haque Badhan, her brother, her brother’s wife, and their child in Venice, Italy.
The ministry is providing the highest level of consular assistance to Badhan and has taken steps to strongly raise the issue with the relevant Italian authorities.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir shared this information in Parliament on Tuesday while responding to a query from lawmaker Akhtar Hossen.
“An attack on a July warrior is an attack on the democratic governance of this country,” the state minister remarked, emphasising that the government has taken the assault on Badhan and her family members very seriously.
He added, “I spoke with the foreign secretary this morning and instructed that the Italian police authorities be notified of the matter, and that Badhan be provided with maximum consular assistance”.
Currently, the Bangladesh Embassy in Rome and the Consulate General of Bangladesh in Milan are maintaining round-the-clock contact with Badhan and her family, providing them with all necessary cooperation.
According to the state minister, Badhan will file a formal complaint with the Italian police.
Once the complaint is lodged, the Bangladesh Embassy will strongly present the issue to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He further noted that diplomatic measures are being actively pursued to ensure appropriate action is taken against those involved in the incident.
The assault occurred earlier when Badhan and her family were in Venice to attend a programme.
The incident has triggered widespread reactions across various quarters, including on social media, prompting the Bangladesh government to treat the matter with immediate gravity.
