Bangladesh’s life insurance market remained top-heavy, with MetLife Bangladesh alone commanding Tk3,481.18 crore in gross premiums in 2025, exceeding the combined earnings of 30 of 36 insurers. The concentration highlights widening gaps in scale, claims performance, and financial stability among the top ten insurers, according to Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) data.
MetLife Bangladesh led the sector with gross premiums of Tk3,481.18 crore, total assets of Tk20,063.51 crore, investments of Tk19,109.18 crore, and a closing life fund of Tk16,267.16 crore. It processed more than 3.05 lakh claims, with unsettled claims at 0.56 per cent.
National Life Insurance Company ranked second with Tk2,340.42 crore in gross premiums, holding about 18 per cent market share. Its total assets stood at Tk7,816.33 crore, and it settled the majority of over 2.25 lakh claims, with only 0.73 per cent remaining unsettled.
Delta Life Insurance Company followed with Tk1,019.13 crore in premiums, leaving 23.34 per cent of claims unsettled, equivalent to Tk131.01 crore, while remaining within its management expense limit by Tk10.62 crore or 3.60 per cent. Jiban Bima Corporation recorded Tk975.95 crore in premiums with 3.54 per cent of claims unsettled.
Former IDRA member Sultan-ul-Abedine Molla said the top four companies have long-standing market presence and strong public trust. “Insurance is a contract where people pay premiums, and when the policy matures, the insurer settles the claim. They have a strong asset base, so naturally their business performance is also very good,” he told TIMES.
Guardian Life Insurance posted Tk886.41 crore in premiums, staying below its management expense limit by Tk34.05 crore or 15.04 per cent. Sonali Life Insurance earned Tk865.87 crore, settling all claims fully. Pragati Life Insurance reported Tk667.13 crore in premiums with 0.53 per cent of claims unsettled, and management expenses within limit by Tk1.04 crore or 0.51 per cent. Popular Life Insurance Company collected Tk500.74 crore, with 0.88 per cent of claims unsettled. Prime Islami Life Insurance recorded Tk388.16 crore, leaving 22.9 per cent of claims unsettled, equivalent to Tk28.07 crore.
Fareast Islami Life Insurance showed significant financial stress, with a negative closing life fund and 90.68 per cent of claims unsettled, amounting to Tk 3,227.73 crore. Its total claims for 2025 reached Tk3,442.28 crore, more than 12 times its gross premium of Tk283.22 crore, and exceeded its allowable management expense limit by Tk28.51 crore.
