Liverpool F.C. left it desperately late to secure a scarcely deserved 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest F.C. in the Premier League on Sunday, with Alexis Mac Allister striking in the 97th minute.
After a largely pedestrian contest in which Liverpool struggled to create clear chances, Mac Allister saw a stoppage-time effort ruled out for handball following a VAR review. Moments later, however, he reacted quickest to a rebound and rifled home the winner deep into added time.
Liverpool’s attacking issues began before kick-off when Florian Wirtz was injured in the warm-up and replaced by Curtis Jones.
Forest threatened early through Callum Hudson-Odoi, but Alisson Becker produced a crucial save. Elliot Anderson also wasted promising openings as the hosts looked the more composed side.
Liverpool’s best opportunity in normal time fell to Mohamed Salah, whose header found Jones, but Forest goalkeeper Stefan Ortega blocked the effort.
The result lifts Liverpool to sixth on 45 points, level with Chelsea F.C. and Manchester United F.C.. Forest remain 17th on 27 points, two clear of the relegation zone.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted his side rode their luck. “We were the lucky ones,” he told the BBC. Mac Allister echoed that sentiment, telling Sky Sports the performance lacked intensity despite the welcome three points.
