Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho, the twin brother of Mir Mugdho who was shot dead during the July mass uprising, has joined BNP.
The party’s media wing said he joined BNP at the chairman’s political office in Gulshan on Tuesday night at 9pm, in the presence of senior party leaders. Shairul Kabir Khan, a member of the BNP media wing, confirmed this information to TIMES of Bangladesh.
When Mir Snigdho was filling out the BNP’s membership form, the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, convener of BNP’s Dhaka North unit Aminul Haque, and Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho’s father Mostafizur Rahman were present.
The party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman joined virtually. On his behalf, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir received Snigdho’s membership form.
The 27-year-old Mir Snigdho is serving as the deputy chief national commissioner of Bangladesh Scouts.
During the quota reform movement in 2024, Mir Snigdho’s twin brother, Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho, was shot dead while distributing water to protesting students in Azampur, North Dhaka.
After completing his undergraduate studies in mathematics at Khulna University, he was pursuing an MBA at Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in Dhaka, while also working as a freelancer.
Minutes before he was shot, Mugdho ran towards the students holding a bottle of water amid tear gas, shouting, “does anyone need water?” Following his death, the video quickly went viral on social media.
Among the deaths in July that galvanised the student movement, Mir Mugdho’s death was one of the most significant.
