Jahangirnagar University (JU) has penalised 20 students from the Physics and History departments a total of Tk6.15 lakh over two separate incidents of ragging.
The decision was communicated through two separate office orders signed by the university’s Acting Registrar, Dr ABM Azizur Rahman, on Wednesday, following decisions taken at a special Syndicate meeting held on Sunday.
Under the administrative directive, the affected students will not be permitted to participate in ongoing or upcoming scheduled examinations until the fines are fully paid.
The disciplinary measures were enforced in accordance with Section 3(2)(d) of the university’s “Students’ Discipline Ordinance 2018”.
The university administration also issued a warning that stricter action would be taken against them if they engage in similar acts of indiscipline in the future.
Physics department incident
In the first incident, several students of the 2024–25 academic session from the Physics department ragged students of the 2025–26 academic session of the same department on the west side of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Haq Hall from 10pm on 20 July to 3am the following morning.

Allegations against them included inhuman treatment, abusive language, and forcing freshers to perform sit-ups while holding their ears.
Eight students from the Physics department received fines ranging from Tk35,000 to Tk50,000, bringing the total fine for this incident to Tk3.65 lakh.
Among them, Md Zahid Hasan, Md Fazle Hasan Fahad, and Syed Sakib Ahmed Ratul were fined Tk50,000 each; Md Mahmudul Amin Siam, Md Moustafizur Rahman Miju, and Md Faisal Ahmed were fined Tk45,000 each.
The two others, Md Mahmudul Hasan Khan Akib and Md Al-Amin Hossain, were fined Tk40,000 and Tk35,000, respectively.
History department incident
In the second incident, several students of the 2024–25 academic session from the History department were accused of ragging 13 students of the 2025–26 session from the same department at the University School and College field from 11pm on 3 July to 2am.
The office order said that victims were subjected to verbal abuse, forced sit-ups holding their ears, and various forms of harassment under the pretext of “teaching manners”.
Twelve students from the History department were fined between Tk20,000 and Tk30,000, amounting to a total fine of Tk2.50 lakh for this incident.
Md Abu Abtahi Onik was fined Tk30,000 and the eleven other students—Nasim Uddin Mazumder, Md Mahfuzur Rahman Anto, Abdullah Mahdi, Subhashish Roy Pranto, Md Raihan Khan, Md Naimul Hasan, Md Isfaq Hadi, Naim Ahmed Sojib, Kartik Chandra Roy, Kazi Shah Jamshed Alam Nabil, and Saifullah Mansur Anan—were fined Tk20,000 each.
According to the university authorities, until the fines are paid in full, none of the penalised students will be allowed to sit for ongoing examinations, term finals, or any future scheduled tests.
