Jagannath University (JnU) authorities have tightened security on the campus following clashes between Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists, but said classes and examinations will continue as scheduled.
JnU Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Rais Uddin on Wednesday said police assistance would be sought to ensure overall security on campus, adding that academic activities would remain unaffected.
“Classes and examinations will continue as usual,” he said.
The decision came after a special meeting on Tuesday evening following the clashes, where the vice-chancellor announced that all injured students would receive equal medical treatment and formed a four-member committee to investigate the incident.
Additional security measures were put in place across the campus on Wednesday morning, with authorities increasing checks at different entry points. However, student attendance on campus remained low.
Meanwhile, the university units of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti and Inqilab Moncho staged a protest in front of the main gate, demanding action over the clashes.
The protesters placed a five-point demand, including handing over construction work of the university’s second campus to the army, stopping tender manipulation and corruption, banning politics by non-students on campus, ensuring student safety and taking action against those involved in the attack.
Jatiya Chhatra Shakti unit President Shaheen Mia alleged that the administration had obstructed their programme and failed to control the situation.
Inqilab Moncho member Ismail Hossain Tasin claimed that the proctorial team initially prevented their programme and later activists affiliated with Chhatra Dal attacked leaders and members of different student organisations.
Chhatra Shakti General Secretary Ferdous Sheikh said those involved in the clashes should be permanently expelled.
He also demanded temporary accommodation for students on the university’s seven acres of land within six months and immediate progress on the second campus project.
The clashes took place on 4 August during a programme marking July Uprising Day-2026 at the university’s central auditorium.
Members of the university students’ union, Chhatra Shibir and Inqilab Moncho attempted to enter the venue carrying placards demanding progress on the second campus project, temporary accommodation and improvements to medical facilities.
A confrontation broke out after objections from the proctorial team and Chhatra Dal activists, which later escalated into chases and clashes.
The violence later spread to the Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital area, where several rounds of clashes left around 70 people injured, including the Jnucsu vice-president, general secretary and assistant general secretary, as well as activists from Chhatra Shakti, Inqilab Mancha, Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir.
