Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) observed July Uprising Day-2026 on Wednesday with a series of programmes, paying tribute to the martyrs and expressing solidarity with the injured of the 2024 movement.
The day began with a voluntary blood donation drive at the university medical centre at 10:00am, followed by a painting competition for school students at 11:00am. Vice-Chancellor GKM Mustafizur Rahman visited the exhibition of paintings, said a press release.
A virtual photo contest for university students was also held, with submissions capturing memories of the uprising, patriotism and aspirations for an egalitarian society.
After Zuhr prayers, a special prayer was offered at the central mosque for the martyrs and the injured. The VC, pro-VC, treasurer, proctor, registrar, teachers, students and staff attended it.
A discussion and memorial programme was held at Begum Sufia Kamal Auditorium at 3:30pm, with VC Mustafizur Rahman as the chief guest and Mohammad Sharif Raihan in the chair.
Pro-VC Md Jahidur Rahman, Treasurer Md Saiful Islam Afrad, deans, directors, proctor, registrar, department heads, teachers, students, officers and employees were present at the event.
The programme began with the screening of a documentary on July Uprising, followed by speeches from two students. Gazipur Agricultural University Teachers’ Association President Nasrin Akhtar Ivy and General Secretary Mohammad Saiful Alam spoke, among others.
Senior professor Md Abu Ashraf Khan and Registrar Abdullah Mridha also addressed the event.
Students performed poems, patriotic songs and recitations inspired by the uprising.
The VC handed over prizes to the top three winners of the painting competition.
In his speech, Mostafizur Rahman said the martyrs’ sacrifice was not merely a historical event but an eternal inspiration for conscience, courage and responsibility.
He called on all to work together to ensure that fascism could never again be established in Bangladesh. He thanked the university’s students for their contribution to the fall of the fascist government.
The programme concluded with a reaffirmation of the university’s commitment to building a non-discriminatory, humane and prosperous Bangladesh.
