The death toll from a fire following a family dispute in the capital’s Sutrapur has risen to two after another victim died while undergoing treatment.
Md Siddique, 55, died at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery while receiving treatment for his burn injuries, according to medical sources.
Earlier, his relative Md Imon, 25, died at the same hospital.
Five members of the family, including a woman, suffered burn injuries when a fire was set at a residence in the Shyambazar-Chamartuli area of Sutrapur over family dispute around 4:30pm on 19 September.
The injured were identified as Siddique, 60, Imon, 26, Rajib, 38, Arifur Rahman Dhalu, 35, and Tania Akter, 20.
All five were taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery following the incident.
Sultan Mahmud, a resident surgeon at the Burn Institute, said Siddique had suffered burns to 35 per cent of his body, while Imon sustained burns to 90 per cent.
Rajib, Arifur and Tania suffered burns to 15 per cent, 8 per cent and 60 per cent of their bodies, respectively.
According to Sonia Akter, wife of Arifur Rahman Dhalu, an argument broke out between Imon’s sister Sultana and Tania over cleaning stagnant dirty water in front of their houses on 19 September.
Sultana later informed Imon, who was working in Saudi Arabia but had recently returned to Bangladesh, about the dispute.
Family sources said Imon became involved in altercation with relatives. At one point, he allegedly threatened the family and poured petrol on himself and splashed it onto the other family members before setting the fuel alight with a matchbox.
The fire immediately engulfed the five people, family members said.
Neighbours and relatives subsequently rushed the injured to the Burn Institute, where they were admitted for treatment.
Imon, who had suffered burns to 90 percent of his body, died at around noon on 20 September while undergoing treatment in the hospital’s intensive care unit, Dr Sultan Mahmud confirmed.
Siddique later died while undergoing treatment, raising the death toll from the incident to two.
