Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has called for taking initiatives with future generations in mind, saying current actions will determine how the next generation remembers them.
“If we think only about ourselves, the future generation will not honour and respect us,” he said.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of a Scout conference held at the auditorium of Lakshmipur Government College on Saturday morning.
Addressing the event, the minister said discipline and cleanliness were closely linked to education.
He said acquiring academic knowledge alone was not enough, as true education broadens people’s thinking and helps them distinguish between right and wrong.
“Through education, we learn what needs to be done for human welfare. Academic learning without moral education can often become dangerous,” he said.
The minister stressed the importance of building character and morality alongside formal education.
He urged Scouts to prioritise discipline and moral values in addition to their studies, saying Scout activities should be expanded across all sectors of society.
Calling on young people to engage in social, religious, sports and humanitarian activities beyond politics, Anee expressed concern over the rising spread of narcotics.
He said protecting the younger generation from drug abuse had become a major challenge.
Superintendent of Police Md Abu Tareq, Lakshmipur Government College Principal Md Yusuf, former Principal Muhammad Manjurur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner Samrat Khisa and former Principal Md Main Uddin Pathan, among others, attended the programme.
