Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey has reignited speculation about a possible White House run in 2028 after urging Americans to give independent candidates a stronger voice in politics, states The Telegraph.
The Oscar-winning actor shared a six-minute video on social media on 18 October, calling on voters to look beyond the traditional divide between the Democratic and Republican parties ahead of the US midterm elections.
“Independent does not mean you’re middle of the road. Independent is the original road,” McConaughey said, arguing that independent candidates should be taken seriously rather than dismissed as protest candidates or spoilers.
He also suggested that independent lawmakers could encourage compromise in Congress and hold both major parties accountable. However, the actor made no announcement about running for office and did not endorse any political party or candidate.
His remarks have prompted fresh discussion about whether he might pursue the presidency in 2028.
McConaughey has previously explored a career in politics, considering a run for Texas governor in 2021 before deciding against it.
In 2024, he also spoke about exploring the possibility of entering public office, although he later indicated that he would not pursue a campaign at that time.
The actor’s latest comments have drawn both support and criticism. While some observers see his appeal for political independence as a possible indication of future ambitions, others question whether independent candidates could split votes in closely contested elections.
For now, McConaughey has left the question of his own political future unanswered, focusing instead on encouraging Americans to examine candidates’ positions before casting their votes.
