Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has provided financial assistance to a pregnant woman who decided to sell her unborn child to repay debts after her husband’s prolonged illness pushed the family into severe financial hardship.
The prime minister intervened after a news report titled “Akhi wants to sell her unborn child” highlighted the woman’s plight and the desperate circumstances facing her family.
Akhi, who is expecting her third child, has been struggling to make ends meet as her husband, the family’s sole breadwinner, has been suffering from a prolonged illness. The cost of his treatment, along with daily household expenses, left the family heavily indebted, prompting Akhi to decide to sell her unborn child to repay the loans.
After learning of the situation through the news report, Tarique Rahman instructed his Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon to enquire about the family’s circumstances on the day the report was published.
Following the directive, Akhi and her family were quickly located. Within an hour, the prime minister personally contacted them to learn about their situation.
Akhi and her family were subsequently invited to the Prime Minister’s Office, where they received a cheque for Tk1 lakh.
The prime minister also assured the family that he would cover all expenses related to Akhi’s childbirth and help create employment opportunities to ease their financial hardship.
