An elderly man named Khorshed Ali Mondal, 62, died after a fire gutted his house in Saghata, Gaibandha. In the incident, one cow and five goats were burnt to death, whilst three other cattle suffered burn injuries.
The Saghata Upazila Nirbahi Officer confirmed the incident on Friday evening. Earlier, the fire broke out in the early hours of Friday at Char Haldia village under Haldia union of the upazila.
The deceased, Khorshed Ali Mondal, was a resident of Char Haldia village and the son of the late Alhaj Gafur Ali Mondal of the same village.
The deceased’s son, Shah Alam, said the fire originated from a straw shed in the early hours of Friday and subsequently spread to the adjacent bedroom.
He said his father died before the fire could be extinguished, and household furniture along with several cattle were burnt. However, the exact cause of the fire could not be confirmed.
Md Tofazzal Hossain, manager of Saghata Fire Station, said no one had provided them with information regarding the matter. He added that the locals or family might have brought the fire under control themselves, which is likely why they did not inform the fire service.
Saghata Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Mostafizur Rahman said if an application detailing the extent of damage is submitted, necessary steps will be taken to arrange government assistance following proper verification.
