The Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael’, starring Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop, has been rejected from the comedy and musical categories at the 2027 Golden Globe Awards, forcing the film to compete in the drama race unless its studio successfully appeals.
According to Variety, Lionsgate had submitted the film for consideration in the comedy or musical categories, but the Golden Globes committee rejected the request.
The decision reportedly hinged on whether the film’s musical performances advance its storyline, as required by the awards’ eligibility rules.
The ruling means Jaafar Jackson could face a more competitive field in the lead actor in a drama category.
However, the decision does not affect the supporting acting campaigns of co-stars Colman Domingo and Nia Long, whose categories are not divided by genre.
Lionsgate can appeal the decision before the 31 October deadline. If the appeal fails, ‘Michael’ will remain in the drama categories for the upcoming awards season.
