Before Taylor Swift became one of the world’s biggest music stars, she was a teenage songwriter trying to earn the country music industry’s trust.

Two decades after her self-titled debut album arrived, a previously unpublished interview offers a glimpse into the ambition and uncertainty that shaped her early career.

Published by Variety to mark the album’s 20th anniversary on 24 October, the extensive conversation was recorded in January 2008, when Swift was 18 and her career was beginning to expand beyond country music.

Swift spoke candidly about growing up feeling out of place at school, moving from Pennsylvania to Tennessee to pursue music and approaching record labels as a child.

She began visiting Nashville at 11 and later signed a songwriting deal with Sony/ATV Publishing at 14, becoming its youngest songwriter at the time.

Her path was not straightforward. After a development deal with RCA Records failed to lead to a full recording contract, she chose to explore other opportunities and eventually signed with Scott Borchetta’s newly established label, Big Machine Records.

Swift said writing her own material was central to building her identity as an artist. Songs such as ‘Our Song’ and ‘The Outside’ drew on her personal experiences, while she described her songwriting and vocal delivery as conversational.

She also discussed rejection, the challenge of balancing a demanding career with relationships and her determination to remain involved in decisions about her future.

“I want to be here for the next 20 years,” Swift said, explaining why she intended to stay closely involved in managing her career.

The interview revisits a formative period in Swift’s journey, capturing a young artist who recognised the obstacles ahead but remained determined to make her own way.
