Police have demolished illegal structures constructed for drug consumption and gatherings in Ghuntighor railway station area of Gendaria in the capital.

The eviction drive began around 11:30am on Tuesday, during which small house-like structures were knocked down using a wheel loader provided by the city corporation.

Gendaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moniruzzaman Monir said, “We are clearing all roads in Ghuntighor area to make them fit for vehicular movement. The drug dens beside the railway tracks are being evicted, and vehicles will operate through the area constantly.”

He added that equipment from the city corporation, a former councillor, police personnel, and local residents took part in the eviction drive, noting that the operation has received full cooperation from the public.

Earlier on 19 October, the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) and Special Response Battalion (SRB)-10 conducted a joint raid across various drug-prone spots, including Ghuntighor railway station and Munsirtek. At least 14 people were detained during that drive.
