Tanvirul Islam, 26, a member of Chattogram City Committee of National Citizen Party (NCP), died on Wednesday at 10am while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Mir Shoaib, convenor of Chattogram City NCP, confirmed the matter on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased, Tanvirul Islam, was serving as joint member secretary of Bayezid Thana Committee in addition to his role as a member of NCP Chattogram City Convening Committee.

He was the son of Md Abu Yusuf of Hilpara village in Laksam Upazila, Cumilla. He resided as a tenant at the house of Jamal Uddin in Textile area of Bayezid Thana in Chattogram City.

According to NCP sources, Tanvirul was severely injured during the July Mass Uprising.

Following that injury, he frequently suffered from various illnesses and afflictions. If he felt well for one week, he would fall seriously ill the very next week. Consequently, he had to take multiple medicines simultaneously on a regular basis.

Due to his physical illness, he was unable to work properly, leaving him facing a severe financial crisis. Multiple party leaders said continuous illness, the burden of bearing medical expenses, and the loss of his income caused him extreme mental depression.

Regarding the probable cause of his death, Chattogram City NCP Convenor Mir Shoaib said his death might have been caused by a heart attack brought on by a reaction to taking multiple medicines together, or from long-term physical illness and mental depression.

However, when asked about rumours circulating regarding “poisoning” behind his death, the NCP representative clarified that they possess no reliable or evidence-based information supporting the claim of poison consumption.

Shoaib explained that although his death occurred at 10am on Wednesday, that day was a public holiday, and the family took time to decide whether or not to conduct an autopsy.

Moreover, as it was a holiday, complications arose regarding the availability of required doctors at the hospital. As a result, his autopsy was completed at CMCH on Thursday morning.

Chattogram City NCP Member Secretary Arif Moinuddin said Tanvirul had been shot during the July Mass Uprising.

A bullet entered one side of his waist and exited through the other. He was an enlisted injured July warrior. Due to severe pain, Tanvirul often limped while walking and cried in agony.

Shoaib said during the autopsy and legal procedures at CMCH, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) of District Administration, Md Sharif Uddin, was present to supervise the overall situation and provided necessary instructions regarding the funeral and burial arrangements.

However, when Md Sharif Uddin was called on his phone multiple times, he did not answer.

Following the completion of the autopsy, the body was handed over to the family on Thursday afternoon.

No separate namaz-e-janaza was held in Chattogram; relatives departed with the body for Hilpara village in Laksam Upazila, Cumilla, where his namaz-e-janaza and burial will take place.
